Maths Subject Intent Statement
Mathematics is the foundation for everyday life. Our aim is to design a mathematics curriculum which engages, challenges and ensures all pupils achieve their maximum potential. We want children to; become fluent in the basics of mathematics, be able to make links, spot patterns and reason mathematically to enable them to solve problems. We also aim to foster a love of mathematics.
Literacy Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy we want all of our pupils to develop a love of reading and writing. We provide a rich and stimulating language environment where speaking and listening, drama and role play and reading and writing are all integrated to encourage pupils to communicate effectively. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to become confident, competent and expressive users of the language including developing their knowledge of how it works and their ability to analyse and evaluate its main features. We continuously give pupils opportunities to present their ideas in a variety of forms, both in Literacy and across the Primary Curriculum. Our overall aims are for all pupils to acquire a wide vocabulary, be competent in the arts of speaking and listening, to read fluently with good understanding and to write clearly, accurately and coherently.
Science Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, we recognise the importance of Science in the children’s education and everyone’s daily lives. Therefore, as a school, we give the teaching and learning of Science the high prominence it requires and we aim to provide all children with a high quality Science curriculum. This fully adheres to the National Curriculum to ensure all pupils have a good foundation of all the areas of Science, including: knowledge and understanding; working scientifically and the application of Science.
Our progressive approach enables the pupils to build upon their prior learning, make connections to their new learning and be practical as they develop their natural curiosity to become enquiry-based learners by questioning, investigating and evaluating. We ensure that Science is accessible to all learners and we provide many opportunities for them to enjoy, apply and deepen their learning.
Geography Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, our geography curriculum is designed to inspire and generate curiosity about the world and its people. We intend to motivate children to explore the world around them now and for the rest of their lives. Through whole class teaching, teamwork and independent activities we aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills needed to understand our ever-changing environment. Children will acquire a range of geographical vocabulary to support their understanding of location, place, human and physical geography and fieldwork.
History Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, we believe that a well-rounded History curriculum will allow children to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our curriculum provides children with the opportunity to ask perceptive questions which inspire their curiosity and also encourages them to think critically and analytically developing perspective and judgement.
We have designed our curriculum to allow children to make connections between previous and current learning, ensuring that they develop a secure understanding of the chronology of the British Isles and other important periods of History as well as making connections to our wider community and locality. We motivate children through engaging activities, trips and visitors that give all students an opportunity to question the past and begin to understand their own heritage.
Computing Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy we strive to create and deliver a broad and balanced computing curriculum. Recognising that skills and knowledge should be equally valued.
Knowledge and skills are intertwined and are mutually beneficial. Computing is a subject where knowledge and skills combine to allow proficiency. Knowledge combined with skill allows children to build on core computing skills and become increasingly sophisticated users of technology as they move through school.
Music Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy we believe music is a universal language that embodies creativity for all, allowing every child to achieve and enjoy. Our music curriculum engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We enable this by following Charanga music curriculum and small group extra-curricular lessons lead by Peripatetic specialists. Performances play a key role in our children’s musical development, combining various creative skills and are celebrations which are shared with peers and parents, both virtually and in school.
PSHE Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy our PSHE and RSE curriculum is intended to equip children with the personal skills, values and attitudes they need to become healthy, responsible, empowered global citizens. It addresses many of the moral, social and cultural issues that they will face. They will learn to assert their opinions confidently and will be able to empathise with others, being respectful and tolerant. They will know that they have absolute body autonomy. Children will learn about different types of families and relationships, how to look after themselves and stay safe, and they know who they can approach to seek help. Our curriculum will ensure our children leave us as responsible young people, empowered to achieve their full potential.
PE Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, our physical education curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It aims to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Through sessions delivered by teachers and our specialist P.E coach we provide opportunities for our children to compete in sport and other activities to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
Art Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, our art curriculum is designed to develop individual creativity and encourage children to express their ideas independently and collaboratively. We intend to motivate children to develop and extend their skills to confidently experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Through whole class teaching, team projects and individual activities we aim to equip children to think critically and confidently use a range of textures, colours and processes.
DT Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, our design technology (DT) curriculum is designed to encourage children to become independent, creative problem solvers who are able to combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues as well as function and industry. We intend to encourage children to creatively think and design within a defined purpose with a tangible outcome. Through practical and creative activities children learn and develop their skills and subject knowledge drawing on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering and art.
RE Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum has a significant role for the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It promotes respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection.
The principle aim of RE is to engage pupils in an enquiry approach where they can develop an understanding and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influence of principle religions and worldviews in the local, national and wider global community.
Parents/Carers have a right to withdraw their child from Religious Education
All parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child either, wholly or partly, from:
- Receiving religious education (RE) given in school in accordance with the school’s curriculum
- Attendance at religious worship in school

French Subject Intent Statement
At Hatchell Wood Primary Academy, through our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum, we aim to inspire a love of language as part of pupils' lifelong journey of learning. Having an understanding of different languages and countries enables children to celebrate differences in our world while simultaneously encouraging children’s curiosity about language and other cultures.
We introduce the children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating and our teaching enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.
